The room was impeccably clean and the bed comfortable.  The food was delicious and the staff was helpful and attentive.  Listening to the donkey bray and the roosters and sheep from the nearby farms and school was fun.  As the trip from the Hacienda to Ibarra and other activities is at least a half hour to 45 minutes away by winding mountain roads, this would be a great place to stay for a quiet retreat for two or three days where you could sit on a porch with a book and a drink, or go in the pool and relax while being pampered.   We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.  It was a nice way to end our two week sojourn through Ecuador. More read less

We wanted to... read moreWanting to see more than the urban scene in Quito, we booked as stay in Ibarra, at the Hacienda Piman. We wanted to experience life in the lower altitudes of the Andes. The Zaldumbide family traces it s roots in the Hacienda from 1630. One scion of the family, , Gonzalo, was  renowned author; Julio was an ambassador. In the zenith of its glory, the Hacienda commanded 16,000 hectares. It is of a much lesser scale now, but it still has on its grounds a primary school and various farm outbuildings. 

Our room was spacious, clean and attractive. The staff were prompt, competent and courteous. The cuisine was excellent; the bar ws well-stocked. The grounds were well-kept.

From the Hacienda, our guide Marcus Vega took us to various sites. First off was the  : estate of the Jarrin family which had been formerly a sugar plantation, later a dairy farm, and now a  a rose nursery with exports reaching China and Europe. The plantation had deep origins from the 1600s too:. One member of the family was canonized as a saint.  A chapel, with Gregorian chanting,  commemorates her as well as 26 family baptisms. Light refreshment included a local biscuit called a bizcocho. 

We took a short excursion by a train up the Andes to Salinas, which is a settlement for former African slaves brought to tend the sugar cane plantations. The town was celebrating the visit of some soccer players who had formerly achieved some international celebrity in world competition. 

Marcus picked up up and took us to the native market in Otavalo. We bought colorful alpaca blankets and scarves  from the indigenous vendors. 

Finally we visited a site on the equator that systematically debunked myths surrounding the equator. My wife and I took the docent explaining these geophysical mysteries to have a university degree: His English was first-class and his ability to parlay complex relationships and conclusions into readily apprehensible language was masterful. In fact, this training was on the job. He was, in a a word,, impressive. read less
